Like the other black kids in detention, Seaweed is impressed by Tracy’s moves and even more impressed by her open mind.

This excites Tracy, so he teaches her how to dance like a black person. Like the other kids with him now, he dances on the show for ND. Seaweed is the son of Motormouth Maybelle, who hosts Corny Collins’s Negro Day (ND) show. OK, anyway, again, in detention, Tracy meets Seaweed and some other students who all happen to be black. If he can’t sing and dance his face off, put me in a broken parachute and toss me off a plane! Give him an EGOT right now! Heaven truly is a place on earth, and I think it resides in the small space between Ephraim’s lower back and the top of his most perfect behind. OK, anyway, in detention Tracy meets Seaweed, played by one of Hamilton’s greatest creations, Ephraim Sykes. Literally why is she doing this?! It’s remarkable!! Her wig is insane! They could have used her real hair! It’s just a short black wig! I will never overcome this. Rosie’s character’s name is “Health Ed Teacher,” and my excitement couldn’t be at a higher capacity. _-Īt school, Tracy gets put into detention by Rosie O’Donnell(!!!!) for skipping class. But, I’m not one, so what do I know, LOL. It made me happy and sad because the lyrics are so bizarre and over the top, but the exact type of internal monologue conservative or “traditional” white women have. Tracy scurries away after her song, and Velma takes center stage to sing the white woman villain song heard round the world, “(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs.” Kristin can obviously sing her face and behind off, but until last night, I had never really listened to this song. Watching Ariana perform is like seeing the face of your personal savior for the first time. One of the greatest blessings in this lifetime is when actor/singers who’ve been doing one of their two crafts for a while finally get to do the neglected one again on a national stage.

I like Tracy even more when she finds Ariana Grande, who plays Penny Pingleton. Mic issues aside, Baillio has a great voice and killed this song. Unless Tracy woke up at 5 a.m., there should be some break of sun. The musical starts with a clear shot of the Hollywood Hills while Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad sings “Good Morning Baltimore." (Note: The first person of color is a homeless woman dancing in the streets.) I’m very, very confused about the lighting in this scene. The following is my recap of our nation’s new normal: live musical-theater performances.

I didn’t study the soundtrack like I had with other shows, but I could bop to “You Can’t Stop the Beat” with the best of them and I’ve nearly squinted my eyes into non-existence every time I've heard a chorus sing “NEGRO DAY!” This, mixed with my history of crying over cast lists in high school means that I was front and center for Hairspray Live starring Jennifer Hudson. This is for you.) Then, it meant everything. (John is now a close, personal friend - I'm not kidding. I didn’t understand why anyone cared, until I fell deeply in love with a member of the Broadway cast, John Hill, via Myspace. I give Hairspray Live! 4/5 stars, and say it's ok for kids ages 9+.For years as a child, Hairspray meant nothing to me. There is also some extremely mild sexual talk, in I Can Hear The Bells sung by Tracy, she talks about having babies with Link Larkin, and Motormouth Maybelle says several mild pregnancy references, but that's pretty much it. There is still mild language, but "hell" and "damn" is as bad as it gets. There are a couple of kisses, like in the 2007 movie, and the great songs are still there including a song not actually in the original film, Mama I'm A Big Girl Now, but which rolled on the credits, but since they put Mama I'm A Big Girl Now in, they chopped out New Girl In Town, sung by Amber Von Tussle when Tracy Turnblad arrives at auditions for The Corny Collins Show. Though it's not is good as the 2007 musical of the same show (my personal opinion), it is still a great performance, including a cast who'll likely appeal to your kids like: Dove Cameron and Kristin Chenoweth from my favourite film Descendants, Garrett Clayton from Teen Beach Movie, and even Ariana Grande! The messages delivered from the original film are still there, and the whole cast a great vocal range.
